A typical street in Mbale

One of the streets of Mbale, a town in the southeast at the base of Mt. Elgon. It's only a few miles from the Kenyan border.

North of Sipi Mt. Elgon flattens down rapidly to the great plains of ... Karamoja

The highland valley that Sipi spills into. Beyond the cliffs, you can see the plains of Karamoja, a territory of lawlessness and cattle raiding. *Sexy, exciting, dangerous!*

A road in Pallisa district.

Three of Mze's sons

Our hosts in the village.

Mze literally means "Sir;" it's an honorific attributed to his status as the oldest living male born into the clan. He looks frail, standing in the doorway with his canes, but he's as strong as an ox.

The sky was blue[, incredibly azure and studded with large, friendly clouds], the dirt road was orange, and the fields were solid green....

In Bulangira, we went bicycling to Goli-goli clinic on Saturday. That bike had a bell that rang every time you went over a significant bump in the road (which is often). No padding on that seat, either.
